Post-partum care

The postnatal period refers to the 6 weeks directly following childbirth and, from a Chinese perspective, places a strong emphasis on rest and recouperation after childbirth.

You need to look to this time as one of rest and healing. Doing too much too soon can be very depleting as you have just undergone a very taxing experience, especially if you have had a traumatic birth.

The postnatal period can be emotionally very different from what you expected and the first few days are often filled with both feelings of elation and sadness. It is thought that the hormonal fluctuations in the first week after birth contribute to these mood swings and are likely to subside after a few days.

Acupuncture post partum is very beneficial for balancing the energies and will often help women to feel more stable in themselves, and recover more easily. It is advisable to have acupuncture treatment in the first 4 weeks post partum. This may greatly enhance the healing process and may help to avoid future problems.
